CASIO’s Sample Platform: Get the Sounds of the CZ-3000/5000 and More

With today’s software synths offering excellent sound quality and extensive sound design options, is there still a reason to use vintage synth sounds?
If you have ever wondered that, discover CASIO’s sample platform, Waves Place.

CASIO is best known for calculators and watches, but it has also been making electronic musical instruments since 1980.
On Waves Place, you can purchase sounds from CASIO instruments released over the years as WAV samples.

Waves Place offers three main benefits:

  • Get sounds from classic CASIO instruments, including the CZ-3000/5000 PD synthesizers and the MT-40, which changed reggae history.
  • Load WAV files recorded from the original hardware into a sampler and play them in your DAW.
  • The original instruments’ factory preset sounds are available as one-shots and loops.

Highlights: The CZ-3000/5000 PD Synthesizers

The CZ-3000/5000 samples add a distinctive texture and depth to your music when layered with modern synths.
Released in 1985, the CZ-3000 is a digital synthesizer with full-size keys, introduced as a higher-end version of CASIO’s first synthesizer, the CZ-101 (1984).
The CZ-5000 also features a built-in eight-track sequencer.
Despite being digital, these synths make sound design approachable and have remained staples of professional setups used by many artists from their release through to the present.

PD Synthesis: Vintage Sound with a Solid Core

Their distinctive character comes from CASIO’s own PD (phase distortion) synthesis, first introduced in the CZ-101.
It distorts the phase of a sine wave to add harmonics. Changing the amount produces tonal changes similar to sweeping a filter, even though the synth has no filter.
The sound is slightly lo-fi and unpolished, combining warmth and a grainy texture with a solid tonal core.
Because it tends to sit a little further back in the mix, it blends easily while occupying its own space alongside modern synths.

One-Shots Sampled at Every Key, Plus Chorus Versions

The library includes one-shots for 32 tones, with each tone recorded individually across all 61 keys.
Rather than pitching a single sample across the entire keyboard, this approach sounds natural throughout the range.
Versions recorded with the hardware’s built-in stereo chorus are also available. Choose the focused normal sound or the softer, wider and fuller chorus version to suit your track.
It also includes major and minor chords for 17 tones, sampled in whole-tone steps across two octaves.

The MT-40: The Electronic Keyboard That Changed Reggae History

Another highlight alongside the CZ-3000/5000 is the MT-40 electronic keyboard, released in 1981.
A reggae track that became a worldwide hit in 1985 used one of the MT-40’s built-in rhythm patterns exactly as it was.
This rhythm, widely known as “Sleng Teng,” made such an impact that music magazines described it as revolutionary for reggae.
The MT-40 helped spark the computerization of reggae and can be seen as an electronic keyboard that gave rise to a new musical culture.

Waves Place includes rhythm loops in six styles, including Rock and the Sleng Teng rhythm, as well as one-shots of the built-in tones and rhythms.
The inexpensive-sounding yet charmingly characterful sounds also stand out when layered as percussion with modern drums.

More Classic CASIO Instruments, Including the SK-1 and VL-1

Alongside the CZ-3000/5000 and MT-40, the platform offers samples from other CASIO instruments, each with its own character.
All of these are recordings of factory preset sounds from the original hardware stored in CASIO’s instrument warehouse.

SK-1: The Popular Model That Brought Sampling to the World

The SK-1 is a sampling keyboard that lets you capture everyday sounds, such as human voices and pet sounds, then process and play them.
It helped bring sampling, previously an expensive feature available to relatively few people, to users around the world. More than one million units were sold.
Its low bit resolution gives it a distinctive grainy texture.

VL-1: The Synth with a Calculator Loved by the Techno Generation

The VL-1 is a monophonic synthesizer with a calculator, a music sequencer and an ADSR function for creating your own sounds.
During the technopop boom of the 1980s, its affordable price and electronic sounds made it hugely popular among young creators.
Its rhythm sounds, including clicks and snares, also have the distinctive character of a vintage drum machine.

Load the Samples into a Sampler to Use Them in Your DAW

Load Waves Place instrument samples into your DAW’s sampler and you can immediately play them from a keyboard.

The sounds download as separate WAV files for individual notes, rather than as a plug-in.

The basic workflow is to load the files into a sampler and map them to keys, rather than place them on an audio track.

It is simple: select all the WAV files for one tone together and drag them onto the sampler’s keyboard.

In Logic Pro’s Sampler, drop them starting at C2 to match the note names in the filenames (C-2 to C-7), and they will be mapped to the corresponding keys.

Drag one-shots such as kicks and snares onto the pads of a drum sampler.

Arrange your favorite one-shots on the pads to build your own drum kit using sounds from different instrument models.

Many of the included samples are steady sounds with little envelope or LFO modulation, making them easy to shape to your taste.
Use your sampler’s envelopes and filters to tailor the tones to your track.

Other Features

There are a few more features that are useful for production:

  • SXC-1 Expansion Sound Kit: For users of CASIO’s SXC-1 sampler, released in 2026. Includes loops, one-shots and rhythm sounds in three genres, plus four banks of sound layout data that automatically map the samples across 16 pads.
  • Commercial use: Purchased sounds may be used commercially.
  • One-time purchase: Instrument libraries can be purchased separately by model, and once purchased, you can use them in your productions as often as you like.
