Spectrasonics’ flagship synthesizer Omnisphere has received its first major upgrade in a decade with version 3. More than 26,000 new presets bring the total sound count to 41,405, covering styles from pop and EDM to film scoring. With intuitive sound-design tools such as Patch Mutations, 93 effects, and an enhanced synth engine, beginners and experienced producers alike can create high-quality sounds. The effects can now also be used as a standalone plug-in, expanding production possibilities.
A huge preset library, an upgraded synth engine, and powerful FX plug-ins
Spectrasonics’ popular synthesizer Omnisphere has undergone a major evolution with version 3, its first major upgrade in ten years.
Its already extensive preset library has grown further, with sounds for a wide range of genres, from pop and EDM to film music.
Here, we look at the key new features and improvements in Omnisphere 3.
An enormous expansion: More than 26,000 new presets
Let’s start with the presets at the heart of the instrument’s sound.
Omnisphere 3 adds 26,421 new presets across 18 new libraries, bringing the total number of sounds to 41,405.
The collection spans classic synth tones, modern and edgy sounds, ambient textures, film-score sounds, acoustic instruments, and sound effects. With so many choices, it is easier to find the sound you have in mind.

As you can hear, the library includes not only synth sounds but also a wealth of acoustic-instrument sounds, making it well equipped for virtually any genre.
A new workflow for intuitive sound design
This update adds powerful features that make sound design intuitive even if you do not have an in-depth knowledge of synthesis.
Patch Mutations
One notable new feature is Patch Mutations.
It can instantly generate appealing variations of a loaded preset.
Each click of the Mutate button generates a new variation of the loaded preset.
Default makes more natural changes, while Extreme can change the character of a sound much more dramatically. Generated variations are saved automatically and can be recalled later.
This is particularly useful when you want to change a preset slightly but are unsure which parameters to adjust.
Adaptive Global Controls
The Global page has also been redesigned and now includes Adaptive Global Controls.
Tone, Ambience, Filter, Envelope, and other broad sound settings can be adjusted quickly.
These might appear to be the same controls for every preset, but they are optimized to adjust the most important parameters for the selected sound.
This lets you shape a sound intuitively without pushing it outside a useful range, helping you reach the result you want faster.
Now usable as a standalone plug-in: The upgraded FX Rack
Effects are one of the biggest advances in this update.
Omnisphere 3 includes 93 effects units in total, including 35 new effects units.
Even more strikingly, all of these effects can now be used in a DAW as the standalone Omnisphere FX Rack effects plug-in.
The range goes far beyond what you might expect from effects bundled with a synth. It includes vintage EQs and compressors such as Optical Leveling Amp and Classic 1176 Limiter, distortion effects including analog tape saturation, and reverbs such as Solar Shimmer and Velvet Verb.
You can build up to four effects chains in the rack. Presets for vocals, drums, and mastering also make the FX Rack useful for everything from sound design to mixing.
Major improvements to the synth engine
The filters and oscillators at the heart of the synthesizer have been substantially enhanced.
A completely redesigned filter section
36 new filter types have been added, bringing the total to 69.
The new filters in particular recreate the warm saturation of analog synthesizers, opening up deeper sound-design possibilities.
A dual-filter architecture also lets you route two filters in series or in parallel.
Vintage Oscillator Drift
The new Vintage Oscillator Drift feature recreates the subtle pitch fluctuations characteristic of analog synths for a warm, analog-style sound.
Other new features
Beyond its headline features, Omnisphere 3 adds many tools that improve the production workflow.
- MPE support: More expressive control of individual notes
- Quadzone Modulation: Modulate four layers independently to create complex sounds
- The world’s first polyphonic frequency shifter: Full pitch tracking, with serial or parallel operation
- Hardware integration: Use more than 300 devices as hands-on controllers
- User audio import: Use WAV or AIFF files (up to 24-bit/192 kHz) as sound sources
- Full backward compatibility: 100% compatible with Omnisphere 1 and 2 projects
